Or, seven reasons why you should join [livejournal.com profile] sheldon_penny.

So maybe you've seen The Big Bang Theory, maybe not. If you haven't - let me tell you, it is an awesome show for the number of fandom references it packs into a single episode alone, not to mention the fantastic ensemble cast. The premise is that a street-savvy hopeful actress (Penny) moves in across from two roommates (Sheldon and Leonard), a pair of beautiful minds who share a workplace (Caltech) and an interest in all things geek. Leonard/Penny is the show's canon pairing, but Sheldon/Penny is ascendant, and for good reason.

[livejournal.com profile] sheldon_penny is the center of the fandom. Maybe you're a rabid OTPer, maybe you're a multishipper, maybe you like Sheldon/Leonard but the chemistry between Sheldon and Penny is too good to pass up; whatever your motive, you need to be in this fandom. I am not joking. It is AWESOME.

K, so you probably want reasons, right?

STXI recs! I don't write very good reviews, really, because it's always I LOVE THIS SO MUCH or /*INARTICULATE FLAILING*/, so this is more a list of stories I would rec in great detail if I had the interest or the ability. There are easily twenty other stories that I love equally but didn't include, mostly because they're still in progress.

* FYI - I'm also still updating this masterlist of STXI Spock/McCoy fic. If you have something to add, let me know!

[10] Gen (not even all McCoy-centric!)
[05] Het (McCoy/Chapel, Kirk/Uhura, Spock/Uhura, Scotty/Uhura)
[10] Slash (Kirk/Spock, Kirk/McCoy, Spock/McCoy)
[03] IDEK (mixed, genderswap)
[03] Bonus (TOS Spock/Uhura & Spock/McCoy, TNG Data/Yar)

Haven't done any recs in a while, so here we go.

How I Met Your MotherMetal Heart by the_spin (Barney/Robin)

she’s never heard a love story like this one. This was recommended to me as a fandom essential when I was writing the Barney/Robin manifesto, and I not sure how it slipped past me because this is the story for the pairing. It's actually better and truer than the show, if that's possible, and every single detail is note-perfect. The writing is gorgeous, too. Adult, complete in three parts.

Doctor WhoChaos Theory in Vortex Orbits in Relative Dimensions in Time and Space by earlgreytea68 (Ten/Rose)

And then there came a day when Rose said she was having a baby. Hijinks ensue from there. I'm sure it comes as a surprise to exactly no one that I've been tearing through Doctor/Rose fanfic lately, and this is hands-down the most superb story of the many superb stories out there. I'm also sure it's also old hat to all the Who fans, but I loved it so much I couldn't possibly not recommend it. Even if you aren't a fan of kid!fic, I guarantee you'll fall in love with this. Heck, even if you aren't a fan of Doctor Who, you'll probably fall in love. Teen, complete in twenty-seven parts with sequels.

NarutoDescent by maldoror_gw (Gai/Kakashi)

“I’m coming with you!” Gai tightened the straps on the long wrist-guards of his own armour, over the glove that rose past the elbow. The ANBU tattoo on his right arm seemed almost as dark as the cloth against solid muscle. Kakashi glanced down at Gai’s mask lying on top of the rest of his equipment and wished it could have all stayed in mothballs where it belonged. Nearly all my reading in the Naruto fandom is centered around Kakashi, but Gai/Kakashi is a pairing I stumbled across by accident. In part because of fic like this, it's now my Naruto slash pairing of choice. The end of the story came as a shock because I was so thoroughly emerged in Konoha; it's the sort of thing I hope to be able to write with such ease and grace someday. PG-15, complete in two parts.

Buffy the Vampire Slayerdescant descending by macha (Buffy/Spike)

cante fable in ten parts about the hieros gamos or sacred marriage in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, in which Buffy descends to the underworld on Spike's behalf. I'm an enormous fan of experimental or off-beat fanfiction, and this story is like reading art. Brilliant and layered; I don't have the words to do it justice. Unrated, probably PG-13-ish, complete in ten parts.

Harry PotterTriumph of the Last Marauder by mousapelli (gen, Harry-centric)

“My godfather had a 1968 Triumph Bonneville that he loved more than anything except me." I'm always hard-pressed to articulate what exactly I love so much about this story. I do love it - it's one of my very favorite HP fics - and the whole thing slots into canon and yet expands on it so perfectly. There's a fantastic sense of continuity with the past, and at the same time Harry feels real and very much the teenaged boy he is. And, of course, everything is better with motorcycles. PG-ish, oneshot.

Please steal?  Recs are of the good.

Pick and rec one random fic from at least five of your favorite fandoms. Then, explain why.

Dragonball ZIf Skies Should Fall by Halfpenny (Goku/Videl)

Maybe it was best that Goku disappeared when he had.  This, like so many of my favorite fics, has a sort of lyrical melancholy to it.  The prose is gorgeous, and Halfpenny takes a real-world idea - the disintegration of marriage - and applies it to the most unlikely of characters.  Goku/Videl is not a ship I ever thought I'd read; this story is just that good.  Oneshot, probably in the PG/PG-13 range.

NarutoDuty Before Honor by SilverShine (Kakashi/Sakura)

Sakura knew why Tsunade didn’t want a virgin on this mission. Things might get out of hand. Acts might be carried out too far. She was glad Kakashi was accompanying her, but right then she wouldn’t have minded the entire population of Konoha.
I'm almost ashamed to admit how much I love this story, and how much it satisfies my kinks - there's madly-in-love-but-tortured Kakashi, there's innocent-but-still-strong Sakura, there's lots of emotional tension and an ultimately satisfying ending.  Although the plot could be straight out of a Harlequin romance novel, the story really is very well written, and there's awkward!sex to boot.  Complete in 19 parts, borderline R/NC-17.

Buffy the Vampire SlayerQuick and Bitter, Slow and Sweet by Miss Murchison (Spike/Tara)

Multiple Personality Disorder!Spike, Spike/Tara, with Spike and Dawn, and Tara and Dawn friendship and bit of Spike/Buffy and Spike/Willow angst.  I resisted the idea of reading Spike/Tara for quite a while, but Miss Murchison's Spike/Buffy fiction is so excellent that I finally gave in.  (I'm pretty sure the author does the best job of writing soulless Spike outside of the Barbverse, which is high praise indeed.)  And wow, am I ever glad I gave this story a chance, because not only does it offer an opportunity for two of the more maligned characters in S6 to have a healthy, loving relationship, it also makes it seem as if Spike and Tara fit in ways not possible with their previous lovers.  Also, I love how Spike and Tara look out for Dawn...and a very small, very petty part of me is glad to see Buffy and Willow brought low.  Complete in four parts, R.

Angel the SeriesI Don't Know Where I'll Be Tonight (...) by spuffyduds (Faith/Wesley)

So she picks up postcards from concrete-dinosaur diorama museums, crappy goofy-golf establishments. Writes a town name, drops it in the mail.  There are a lot of reasons why this ranks as one of my favorite stories for what is quite possibly my OTP to end all OTPs, not the least of which is the perfect Faith voice.  I'm also a sucker for any story that offers a happy post-series ending, and yes, this probably belongs more in the BtVS category, but by classifying it as AtS I'm not technically cheating.  ;)  Oneshot, PG/PG-13.

X-MenBlind Sight by Valerie Jones (Gambit/Rogue)

This is the sequel to "Thick As Thieves". As Operation: Zero Tolerance turns into a full-fledged mutant hunt, Remy must use all of his resources to keep the X-Men safe while they search for a way to bring Bastion down.  *FLAILS*  I DON'T EVEN HAVE WORDS FOR HOW AMAZING THIS STORY IS.  Seriously.  It's that good.  If I had to pick one favorite fanfic of all time, it would probably be this fic.  Seriously.  It's that good.  The sheer scope, and the characterization, and the way it ties in to canon, and oh, Remy...I don't even have words.  Work in progress, currently at 61 chapters, probably PG-13/R.
