CHARACTERS: Subaru
NOTES: Oh, I'd forgotten how much X hurts.
SUMMARY: Subaru just goes on living, living and living and living forever in a sort of cursed half-life, because there's nobody he loves.
CASTLES
Subaru just goes on living, living and living and living forever in a sort of cursed half-life, because there's nobody he loves. He watches as Kamui falters and finally wins, and then he watches God's majesty grow old and pinched until he crumbles like an autumn leaf. He watches his grandmother fade, he watches the remaining Seals drift away, he watches Tokyo destroy itself and then birth again new from the ashes of the old. He helps when he can, kills when he can't, lives on smoke and memories and always the scent of sakura.
He builds castles in the air, fanciful constructs with no solid foundation that collapse almost as quickly as he dreams them up. He keeps building his castles anyway, though, crafting them out of words like this:
Seishirou and Subaru meet at a train station. Seishirou is a veterinarian, Subaru a student. For four years Seishirou flirts and Subaru blushes; when Subaru turns twenty, they move in together, but then Seishirou decides to punish Subaru by dying because Subaru is selfish, selfish...
Seishirou and Subaru meet on top of a building. Subaru is twenty-five, Seishirou thirty-four, and they are both sorcerers. They go on three dates. Seishirou is articulate and kind and a touch eccentric; Subaru is hesitant and thrilled and gentle. Except one of them is actually an assassin. Which one, Subaru never knows, but things always end with Seishirou dying...
Seishirou and Subaru meet in another world. Seishirou is younger than Subaru, but he's missing the same eye and he wears glasses that are a specter from Subaru's childhood. This Seishirou is looking for vampires, but Subaru kills him anyway. It is what Seishirou-san wanted, after all...
Seishirou and Subaru meet. Seishirou is eighteen, twenty-five, thirty-four; Subaru is nine, sixteen, twenty-five. Seishirou is a veterinarian and a killer and a gambler. Subaru is an onmyoji. They are both dragons, and in the end, Seishirou dies...
But Subaru never does.
