tsubasa, song meme

song meme / tsubasa + kuro/fai
Not necessarily quality writing, but still lots of fun. Stolen from the fandom at large:

1. Pick a character, pairing, or fandom you like.
2. Turn on your music player and put it on random/shuffle.
3. Write a drabble related to each song that plays. You only have the time frame of the song to finish the drabble; you start when the song starts, and stop when it's over. No lingering afterwards!
4. Do ten of these, then post them.

01. Revolution / The Beatles

"That," Fai said, "is not music. This is music."

Kurogane slanted an eyebrow. "That's the Beatles. What are you, eighty?"

"Just because I'm not all up with your punk or your indie or - or your emo music - "

Kurogane's flung history textbook missed Fai's face by mere inches. "I am not emo! Will you just drop that already? Now the entire dorm thinks I wear black eyeliner and listen to MCR, and they don't even know my face from Adam!"

Fai's lips quirked mischievously. "Well, how was I supposed to know that eyeliner was your sister's?"

02. You've Got to Hide Your Love Away / The Beatles

He can't do this: not one more month, not one more day, not one more hour.

"We can't," Kurogane says. "You're already betrothed," Kurogane says. "You're a prince," Kurogane says, and turns his face away; but the next night he comes back, and the next, and the next.

"I'm just a guard," Kurogane says, and Fai draws him closer in the dark.

Fai draws him closer in the dark, and wishes for a life in the light.

03. Time / Pink Floyd

Clocks, always clocks, all around him clocks: unceasing, relentless, perfect and accurate and wrong. Always clocks, a testament to his own mortality.

"You're not going to live forever," Kurogane reminds him, and Fai just laughs.

"Maybe not forever," he says, "but I'll live longer than you. And that's what matters, isn't it?"

"Hn," Kurogane answers. "All this, just because I killed your brother?"

"You killed my twin," Fai says, and there is no laughter in his voice now. "You killed my twin, you killed my brother, you son of a bitch, didn't I swear I'd have revenge - " That ever-present hysteric edge is surfacing; he reaches forward, grabs Kurogane by the hair, and lifts his battered face. "You killed my brother, and I'll see you chained here until the world ends, I'll tear out your liver again and again, I'll spell you back to life and beat you to death and bring you to life again - "

"Really," Kurogane says. "Really. You haven't done it yet, though, have you?"

Fai trembles, and Kurogane's cracked lips break into a smirk. He leans closer, as close as the restraints will let him, and whispers. "Shouldn't have fallen in love with me, should you?"

Fai trembles.

04. We Can Work It Out / The Beatles

"Oh come on!" Kurogane shouts, and pounds again on the door. "It was a perfectly reasonable mistake, the two of you look exactly alike - "

The door flies open, and Kurogane nearly crashes in on top of Fai. "Exactly alike?" Fai says, his voice flat and low. "Exactly alike. Is that so."

Kurogane backtracks furiously. "Not exactly alike! It was an honest mistake, anyone could have done the same - "

Fai's face is expressionless, so Kurogane tries one last time. "Look, you idiot, if I wanted to be dating your brother, I would be. But I like you, even though you're absolutely crazy, even though you blow off your schoolwork and play strange pranks and have absolutely no sense whatsoever and..."

Fai's lips twitch. "Well," he finally relents, "I suppose I could forgive. In time. After you make it up to me."

Kurogane just groans.

05. Always Look on the Bright Side of Life / Spamalot

They had been lost in the forest for three days.

"This," Kurogane fumed, "is entirely your fault."

"I don't know about that," Fai said. "After all, it was Syaoran who thought we should - "

"Your fault!" Kurogane shouted. "Entirely! Your! Fault!"

"I didn't lose the map - "

"Your fault," Kurogane concluded.

"Kuro-pon, you don't have to be so negative about everything! You need to cheer up. I've always found that a bit of whistling brightens my day." Fai made a high-pitched whirring noise in the back of his throat.

Kurogane's head whipped around. "That is not whistling, you imbecile - " he started, and crashed straight into a shrubbery.

Sakura and Syaoran couldn't help but share a grin.

06. Mobile / Avril Lavigne

There's no home for Fai anymore, no warmth in the cold, no shelter from the storm. Valeria is gone; even the tower in that timeless valley is long lost. Now Celes is gone too, and there is no place in this dimension or any other that Fai can really claim as his own.

Kurogane doesn't understand, doesn't know why Fai so badly needs a place to call home. "I just do," Fai explains hopelessly. "Just to know that I have a home, that somewhere at my back it exists - there's comfort in that."

"Then be home," Kurogane says, and wraps his arm around Fai. Fai looks at him in surprise, then smiles.

"I guess," the magician says, "that I already am."

07. Lemmings on the Run / E-Rotic

"Lemmings," Fai says.

"What?"

"Lemmings," he says, and nods to himself. "They're not really suicidal, you know."

"Okay," Kurogane says, and then, "What?"

"They run off of cliffs en masse. People think they're suicidal. It's a common misconception."

"Why are you telling me this again?"

Fai nods towards the In the Groove machine. "You always play that one song. I just though I ought to tell you that."

Kurogane glances down at his palmful of tokens, then back at his boyfriend. "I will never understand you."

"That's okay," Fai says. "DDR is better anyway."

Well, that's a citable offense, so who can blame Kurogane for putting Fai in a headlock?

08. Girlfriend / Avril Lavigne

"Why are you dating her, anyway?" Kurogane asks.

His roommate looks up, eyes dreamy. "What?"

"Why are you dating her?" Kurogane repeats.

"Only because she's perfect," Fai answers indignantly. "Why do you ask?"

"It's only - she just seems all wrong for you. She's so - so serious, and uptight, and - "

"So are you," Fai says, and fixes Kurogane with a knowing look. The dark-haired man flushes bright red; a word hangs unspoken in the air. Jealousy.

Fai diffuses the tension with his typical sunny smile. "Don't worry, Kuro-sama," he says. "It's not long-term, anyway."

"Like I care," Kurogane grunts, and turns away -

But that night he sleeps more easily.

09. Every Little Thing (He) Does Is Magic / Shawn Colvin

Fai's hand hovers over the telephone: hovers, hesitates, and finally retreats.

"No," he murmurs to himself. "Too soon." He sinks back on the couch, digs for the TV remote, and finally finds it buried between two cushions. He flicks through channels, pauses at The Simpsons, pauses at The Golden Girls, skims past the news stations -

(He does not think about Kurogane.)

One slim hand reaches up and adjusts his eye patch, and he idly considers paying his bills. Maybe not. They aren't due until next week anyway, and today's a day for laziness. Water streams down the windows, and the patter of rain on the roof is soothing.

(He thinks about Kurogane.)

"Too soon?" he murmurs again, and before he can stop to think his hand is on the phone. He dials the number from memory, waits through three, four rings -

"Kurogane," says a gruff voice.

"It's Fai," he says. "Are you busy today?"

The answer is immediate. "No."

Fai grins.

10. Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite / Across the Universe

"I've never been to the circus before!"

Kurogane looks askance at Fai. "So? Neither have I."

"I have," Syaoran says quietly. "With Sakura. There used to be a circus every year on her birthday. They came from another country - " He falls silent, and glances back over his shoulder towards the slumbering princess.

Fai sets a gentle hand on Syaoran's shoulder.

11. Music When the Lights Go Out / The Libertines

It's not love.

Fai won't let it be love. He's already attached enough; attached to Sakura, attached to Syaoran, attached to Mokona -

Attached to Kurogane.

He won't let it be love, though. He's had enough personal experience with love to know that it never turns out well.

So when he smiles at Kurogane, when they move together in the night, when the other man growls at him, when they casually brush hands -

It's not love.

Fai won't let it be.
